Chicago Transit Authority Public Art Project 2025. Berwyn L Train Entrance Red Line: Edgewater Melange East and West, Smalti, Handmade Glass and Ceramic

David Lozano draws on the rich architectural and cultural history of Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood to reimagine traditional notions of beauty. Created in his signature baroque style, the pieces weave together symbolic imagery, archival photographs and dynamic brushwork. Motifs include terracotta architectural details, details, oval windows inspired by a nearby residence, and a blue stencil pattern referencing Louis Sullivan’s original Chicago Stock Exchange design. The window view of cherry blossoms recalls the area’s agricultural past, when this area was home to orchards and farmland in the early 1900s. Together, these elements form a textured, layered tribute to place, memory, and transformation.
